Wamiqa Gabbi’s Career
In her early days, Gabbi made her first film debut when she was only 13 years old in Imitiaz Ali’s Hindi cult-romantic film ‘Jab We Met’. She played the character of Geet’s cousin, and her role was that of a child actor but it certainly soft-launched her into the acting industry.
Initially, she took on minor roles in movies like ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Mausam’, but her role in ‘Sixteen’ brought her some recognition. Some critics mentioned that her performance was ‘the standout’ in a mediocre movie.
In 2013, she entered Punjabi cinema with the comedy film ‘Tu Mera 22, Main Tera 22’, which was a success. She acted opposite Yo Yo Honey Singh and Amrinder Gill. Subsequently, she went on to be cast in other Punjabi hit movies like ‘Ishq Brandy’, ‘Ishq Haazir Hai’.
Next, she went on to venture into Telugu cinemas and played a role in ‘Bhale Manchi Roju’ opposite Sudheer Babu – it was inevitable that the movie would become a box-office success.
She also ventured into Tamil cinema in 2016 when she starred in the romantic movie ‘Wamiqa Gabbi’ wherein she was cast opposite Balakrishna Kola.
Wamiqa had already managed to launch herself into stardom without having the entitled surname of ‘Kapoor’ or any other Bollywood royalty, and as time passed by, Wamiqa started gaining traction and recognition.
She gained more attention for her performance in series like Grahan, Mai: A Mother’s Rage, and Modern Love: Mumbai. The next few years did not give her much success, but she proved to the entertainment industry that she was a force to reckon with when she bounced back to the spotlight with a powerful role of a straightforward lawyer in the crime drama film ‘Kali Jotta’. The movie was Punjabi based.
This caused a significant breakthrough in her career, but when she was given the role of a courtesan in the critically acclaimed series ‘Jubilee’, she had successfully brought all of Bollywood and the general public under her territory. She went on to appear in the thriller series ‘Khufiya’ wherein she earned her first Filmfare OTT Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 2024, Gabbi went on to appear in the Hindi action film ‘Baby John’ opposite Varun Dhawan in the titular role. However, the movie did not perform well at the box office but everyone praised her performance.
