Back in 2023, we saw the legendary actor Sunny Deol make his amazing return to Bollywood with the sequel to his first film ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ in 2001. One of the best things about the sequel movie was that the three main cast members had reprised their roles from the first movie. 

Gadar 2 is an Indian Hindi-language period action drama film which was directed by Anil Sharma and written by Shaktimaan Talwar. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, Tara Singh (played by Sunny Deol)  is shown to return to India and Pakistan to rescue his imprisoned son Jeete (played by Utkarsh Sharma).

Summary of the Gadar 2 Movie Plot

Dating back to 1954, Hamid Iqbal the Major-General of the Pakistan Army, is all set to exact his revenge on Tara Singh for eliminating 40 of his soldiers during the latter’s escape from Pakistan with wife, Sakeena (played by Ameesha Patel), and his son Charanjeet ‘Jeete’. Iqbal gets Sakeena’s father Ashraf Ali killed for helping Tara with his escapade to India.

In 1971, Tara, who is working as a goods supplier to the Indian Army cantonment, is happily living with his wife and son, but Jeete is soon supposed to leave for Chandigarh to pursue higher studies. One day, Tara is contacted by Lt. Colonel Devendra Rawat to supply weapons to the Indian soldiers who are about to cross the border during the Third Indo-Pak War. Upon reaching, he is spotted by Iqbal who immediately schemes to kill the former by ordering an explosion at the border. 

Jeete returns to find his family in shambles, and after learning about his father’s disappearance, the good-old son leaves for Pakistan to rescue his father despite protests. Upon arriving in Pakistan, Jeete befriends Tara’s friend Gul Khan who helps secure him a job at a local hotel. 

Secretly, Jeete infilltrates the prison only to find out that his father was never actually captured – on the flip side, Tara emerges in Indian Punjab and reunites with Sakeena. Subsequently, he finds out that his son left for Pakistan and that he is imprisoned there, thus vowing to extract his son from prison.

Tara soon gets noticed, and Iqbal beats up Jeete and publicly humiliates him under the false pretext of him assaulting Muskaan, the woman he loves. Tara arrives and escapes with Jeete amidst the army, but Yahya Khan, the then President of Pakistan and Commander-in-chief of the army, orders Iqbal to capture Tara within 72 hours.

A battle of cat-and-mouse ensues, and Tara and Jeete can finally be reunited and are on their way to leave Pakistan when Muskaan and Kurban Khan show up. Things get bittersweet as Kurban Khan asks Tara to accept Muskaan as Jeete’s bride, but their moment is interrupted when Iqbal captures the group and kills Muskaan’s brother, Farid. 

In the climax of the movie, Tara is able to free himself with Jeete’s help, and they singlehandedly fight the army and escape with everyone in an army tank. Towards the end of the film, Iqbal resurfaces and tries to kill Tara for the last time, but is gunned down by Rawat and the Indian soldiers, and the former approves of Jeete as a member of the Indian army. Everyone returns home in the end.

Gadar 2 Actress “Ameesha Patel” as “Sakeena”

The actress in Gadar 2 is the legendary Ameesha Patel who plays the role of Sakeena, Tara Singh’s wife. 

In the movie, her role as Sakeena or fondly known as ‘Sakku’ is one that resonates as a very lovable yet fierce character. She loves her husband a lot, and always supports him in anything and everything. When Jeete was captured, Sakeena was in shambles and emotionally distraught and when her husband left for Pakistan to free Jeete, she was scared for him but she went along with him.

The portrayal of Sakeena is done by Ameesha Patel, who has made a comeback in Bollywood after a several-year hiatus. She is currently 49 years old, and still looks extremely fresh and naturally beautiful with a striking appearance. 

Gadar 2 Actor “Sunny Deol” as “Tara Singh”

The movie’s entire heart and soul is in the portrayal of Tara Singh, who has been played by none other than Sunny Deol. This is the sequel of the first movie which was in 2001, named ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’. Deol has reprised his role as Tara Singh, now complete with a family and a son who is all set to leave for Chandigarh for his further studies. However, what Singh doesn’t know is that his enemy is lurking in the shadows, looking for any occasion to pounce for a kill that came from a place of deep vengeance.

Ultimately, with Jeete’s unceremonious imprisonment in Pakistan, Tara is all set to free his son, but not without putting up a fight, which he does ultimately and quite heroically. Amidst all this chaos, Tara also acknowledges his son’s love interest, Muskan and accepts her as his daughter-in-law, and the movie ends with the family finally reuniting for good.

Gadar 2 Box Office Collections

On the opening day, ‘Gadar 2’ had collected a net of INR 40 crores, and in its first weekend the movie was able to collect INR 134.88 crores – thus becoming the ninth top opening weekend for a Hindi film. 

Reception and Critical Response

On an aggregate for reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was rated 17% fresh from 12 critics. The rating overall was 4.2/10. 

In the gist of the matter, the movie did falter in a few places with lack of consistency and an interesting plotline, but the work of Sunny Deol and Utkarsh Sharma was praised. Ameesha Patel’s role was also lauded. 

The movie was a major box office success.

Overall, the movie did pretty well and resonated well with the Indian youth as ‘Gadar 2’ came out 22 years after the iconic cult prequel. Fans across the country were overjoyed to see Sunny and Ameesha reprise their roles and deliver to the big screen like they did 22 years ago. Even though the movie did not perform very well with the response, it did perform decently at the box office.
