Born in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Sai Pallavi was born into a Badaga family. The Bagdagas are a group of ethno-linguistic communities living in the Nilgiri district in Tamil Nadu. They have been known to live in nearly 400 villages called ‘Hattis,’ and their official language is Badaga. 

Sai’s hometown is Kotagiri in the Nilgiri district and her parents are Senthamarai Kannan and Radha Kannan. She also has a younger sister named Pooja Kannan, who works as an actress.

In 2014 while still studying in Tbilisi, Georgia, Sai was contacted by film director Alphonse Puthren with an opportunity. At first she refused the role but when he approached her a second time for the same film ‘Premam’ she agreed after clearing out a misunderstanding that took place between the duo. In between studies, she shot for the role, and then once the filming was over, she went back to studying – little knowing that she would go on to win several ‘Best Female Debut’ awards in the same year. She has also won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, thus adding to her list of accolades.

Shortly after, she was offered several roles but to this date, ‘Premam’ remains Sai’s breakout film. 

Once again in between studies, she acted in her second Malayalam film ‘Kali’ which was released in March 2016 under the directorship of Sameer Thahir. Here, she asked if it was a religious conflict and she questioned the difference between such killings and cow vigilantism, referring to an unfortunate incident wherein a Muslim was driving cows and was later beaten up and forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram.’. 

This interview went viral and garnered a lot of criticism online, thus leading Sai to issue a clarification statement on her social media handle mentioning that the interview contents were misunderstood and that she would never make a trivia out of something as awful as mob lynchings and she wasn’t comfortable with the same. 

In another instance, an excerpt of the interview did spark up and resurface once again where Pallavi had mentioned how much she disliked violence.
